The Value Of Being 100% Determined

“I hear that’s a lot of work. Are you sure you want to do that?”

This was a question that weighed heavily on my mind, and it was one I can never forget—this was the question that pushed me to match my energy.

Prior to being asked this question by my colleague, I remember going on about how interested I was in graphic design. As a marketing student, I’ve always wanted to explore more of my creative side but felt that I wasn’t skilled enough to give myself that chance. I had no prior knowledge of programs nor much experience. Having to learn everything from scratch meant having to work ten times harder than everyone else. Could I afford to spend that time in addition to my current studies? It would be a lot of work, no doubt. I contemplated this idea day and night, but only when I talked aloud about it was I certain.

“Are you sure you want to do that?”

After pouring my heart out on the topic, he still spoke condescendingly towards me, but then I realized. Is that how I talk to myself? Why am I stopping myself from doing something I am clearly passionate about? Sure, I don’t know much about design yet, but how will I ever know anything if I don’t try? How can I say that hard work will go to waste if I don’t even allow myself to do that work? Finally, I had the answer to his question and my own.

“Yes, it is a lot of work, but I am 100% sure I want to do this.”

Two years have passed since that question. I am now one year away from graduating as a marketing major and graphic design minor. Though it meant several sleepless nights and even summer classes, it was the best decision I made. By following through with my passion and matching my energy, I’ve found myself further down the path that makes me feel the happiest and most successful.
