5 Tips to Help You Get out of Your Comfort Zone

In college, we are all trying out new things such as getting the first job, trying out for the dance team, or playing a new sport. In order to make that first step, you must learn how to get out of your comfort zone and try things you may have never tried before. Here are 5 ways to help you get out of your comfort zone.

1. Create stretch goals for yourself.

What is it that you are trying to conquer? Create some goals that are out of your comfort zone. For example, “I am a shy person that wants to network.” It will be easier to get out of your comfort zone once you know what you are trying to accomplish.

2. Try something that you have always wanted to try even if you are afraid of it.

I almost backed out of going zip lining on my camping trip because of my fear of heights, but I decided to give it a try and I ended up enjoying every single second of it. I want to go back and do it again and try it in new places. As in my case, do not be afraid to take that first step. Once you make the first step towards a goal, you will be able to follow with incrementally challenging steps. If you wanted to be a leader in a club, take the first step and join the club and talk to the people around you. This way, you are making new friends that have similar interests as you while also networking.

3. Become familiar with discomfort and take baby steps.

If you are a shy person and you want to be able to network, you will have to be able to overcome the discomfort of talking to strangers and people around you at events. This may take time to accomplish, but you should take baby steps in order to do so. For example, start with something as simple as saying “Have a nice day” to the person that hands you your coffee in the morning.

4. Educate yourself through research on what you are doing.

In college, you are required to become educated on the topics in your major through class lectures and projects. One way to help you get out of your comfort zone and try something new is to do your research on it first. For example, in order to diminish my fear of zip lining, I would read online stories of people’s positive experiences, further encouraging me to try it out myself. By doing research, it will help you build your confidence, ultimately making it easier for you to try new things out.

5. Take advantage of opportunities that come your way.

Getting out of your comfort zone involves taking risks and trying out things you may not normally consider. When an opportunity comes your way, take advantage of it. For example, if a friend of yours is going on a company tour and you have never been on one, you should consider going with her. This will allow you to explore what a company tour is and if you would be interested in going on more in the future. Again, taking those baby steps will allow you to gain exposure and confidence in achieving your overall goals.
